Services Saturday for William Henry Miller 83

William Henry Miller, age 83 of Chesterton, passed away on April 3, 2016 in Valparaiso.

He was born on October 2, 1932 in Chesterton, to Chester and Gladys (Klinkman) Miller, both of whom preceded him in death.

On July 18, 1953 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Chesterton, he married Nancy (Olson) Miller, who survives in Chesterton.

William is also survived by his children: Michael (Kelly) Miller of Valparaiso, Wendy (Bill) Kappas of Valparaiso, Janet (Gerry) Stanley of Crosby, TX, and Dean Miller of Chesterton. Also surviving are his grandchildren: Justin (Crystal) Stanley of Crosby, TX, Jenny (Justin) Howard of Crosby, TX, Jeremy Miller of Chesterton, IN, Jamie (Justin) McConachie of Chesterton, Nick Kappas (Sophia Percival) of Bloomington, IN, and Derek Kappas (Jessica Swisher) of Chesterton, IN; great-grandchildren: Stella McConachie of Chesterton, Gavin Stanley of TX, and Olivia Howard of TX, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He is also preceded in death by his sister, Delores and brother-in-law, John Hancock.

He was a 1950 graduate of Chesterton High School and a 1954 graduate of Indiana Central College. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1954 to 1956. He also earned his Master’s Degree from IU Bloomington in 1962. His first teaching job was in College Corner, Ohio. In 1959 he moved back to Chesterton where at the high school he taught Advanced Biology and was head of the Science Department until his retirement in 1993. He was head coach of the high school boy's track team for 19 years. After retiring from boy's track he then helped coach the girl's track team. He really enjoyed that. He said, “The girls were more coachable.” He loved fishing, woodworking, and enjoyed summers in Hayward, WI, where they had a summer home. He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and the Lion’s Club. He will be missed by his family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren whom he dearly loved.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 9, 2016, at 11 a.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 2050 N. 1100 N., Chesterton, with Reverend Erik Grayvold officiating. There will be a visitation from 10 a.m. until time of service at the church.

The family will receive friends on Friday, April 8, 2016, from 3 until 8 p.m. at White-Love Funeral Home, 525 S. 2nd St., Chesterton. There will be a Lions Club Service at 6 p.m.

Memorial donations may be given to Opportunity Enterprises or to Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
