Services Monday for Gurney F." Swede" Hanson, Jr.

Gurney F. “Swede” Hanson, Jr., age 89, of Valparaiso, passed away Wednesday, August 17, 2016, at Addison Pointe surrounded by his family.

He was born September 25, 1926, near Stickney, South Dakota, to the late Gurney Hanson Sr. and Genevieve (Kett) Hanson.

On June 10, 1945, he married Betty (Simms) Hanson, who survives.

He is also survived by his children Ardy (David) Biggs, of Chesterton, Jeanne (Dick) Keel of Valparaiso, daughter-in-law Janice Gouwens of Valparaiso, Bill (Kathy) Hanson of Valparaiso and sister Betty Van Tyle of Valparaiso. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by son Bob (Janice) Hanson, sisters Evelyn Hanson, Gladys Parker and Frances Erickson.

He retired from the American Bridge Division of USS in Gary, IN, where he was an Ironworker Superintendent. He graduated from Jackson Twp High School, Class of 1944. He served his country in the US Army from 1945 to 1947. He belonged to Ironworkers Local 395 beginning in 1947. He was also a 32nd Degree Indiana Free Mason, Westville Lodge 192, member of the South Bend Scottish Rite, Orak Shriners and in his retirement a member of the River Pointe Country Club in Hobart, IN. He was also a member of Liberty Bible Church in Chesterton.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 22, 2016, at 11 a.m. at Moeller Funeral Home, 104 Roosevelt Rd., Valparaiso. Burial will follow at Graceland Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 21, 2016, from 2 until 4 p.m., at Moeller Funeral Home, 104 Roosevelt Rd., Valparaiso.

The funeral service will begin on Monday at 11:00 a.m., at the funeral home, with burial to follow at Graceland Cemetery.
