Donald L. Cope, age
79, of Porter, IN passed away at Franciscan hospital in Chesterton on July
He was born in
Cadiz, Ohio on July 8, 1936 to L. Drennan and Anna W. (Campbell) Cope.
When he was born,
they broke the mold. He always looked at the bright side of life and enjoyed
talking to everyone he met. In his earlier days, he was a roller skater and
gave many lessons and especially enjoyed teaching the ladies the basics.
After graduation, he joined the Army and was an excellent marksman and a
parachutist. He also had a tow truck/wrecking service that kept him very
busy. For about four years Don was on the Porter town board. He always said
he had to quit that position for health reasons, “the people got sick of
me”, which was a good example of Don’s sense of humor. Don was also a mason
with the Calumet Lodge # 379. Later he started a drive-away company where he
would pick up vehicles direct from the factory and deliver to the end buyer
all over the U.S. and Canada. He enjoyed meeting people along the way and
always had a new joke to tell. When he was at home, he was always working on
a project out in his garage or completing tasks on his “honey-do” list. He
also liked to work on puzzles in the winter. He would sometimes hide the
last piece so he could say he finished it first.
Don was preceded in
death by his parents, his wife, and six siblings. One brother, Larry Cope,
who lives in Washington, survives him. Life-partner, Pam Heuton, has been
sharing his life with him in Porter for many years. He will be greatly
missed by all who knew him.
Visitation will be
at Edmonds and Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton, IN, 46304, on
Monday, July 11, from 4:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m., with funeral service at 7:30 p.m.
Don was very proud
to be a U.S. Veteran. In lieu of flowers, he would like donations to be
given to Veterans Court of Indiana, PACT office, Attn: Veterans Court of
Indiana, 1356 West Lincolnway, Valparaiso, IN, 46385.
