Back To Front Page

Lynn Frances Lukmann, 60, of Chesterton, Ind., passed away on Sunday, Jan. 31, 2016.

She was born on Dec. 17, 1955, in Gary, Ind., to Lester C. "Bud" and Frances E. (Smith) Lukmann, Jr.

She is survived by her mother, Frances Lukmann-Bergum of Chesterton; brother, L. Charles Lukmann, III of Chesterton; sister, Beth E. LeBlanc of Chesterton; aunt, Marilyn Fouts of Gary; niece, Kelly E. McNamara of Chesterton; nephew, Jeremy A. Lukmann of Chesterton; great-nephews, Jacob John Boldi and William Michael McNamara, both of Chesterton; and very special friends, Sue Colby and Gina Carroll, both of Griffith.

She was preceded in death by her father, Lester “Bud” Lukmann, Jr.; grandparents; Oscar and Ruby Smith and Lester C. and Mary Lukmann, Sr.

Lynn, for 14 years a resident of Valparaiso after re-locating from Griffith, graduated from Griffith High School in 1974; from St. Mary's College in Notre Dame, Ind., in 1978; and then, in 1984, received her Master's in Education from Purdue University Calumet. For 38 years Lynn was a teacher, first at Nativity in Portage, followed by St. Mary in Griffith, Griffith Middle School, and most recently Beiriger Elementary School in Griffith. She was a member of the Indiana State Teachers Association and the American Federation of Teachers.

Lynn did not so much choose teaching as she was chosen by it, and the life of learning which she taught so many to live by her own passionate example will be paid forward by the countless students whom she mentored, nurtured, and cherished. She was every young student's ideal of a teacher: a grownup with a child's heart.

Lynn was also a gifted athlete who coached girls league softball in Griffith, who in her own playing days scored an unassisted triple play, and who was an ardent Notre Dame fan and Fighting Irish football season-ticket holder.

And Lynn loved being an aunt: to Jacob and William she was steadfastly devoted, as she had been to Kelly and Jeremy.

Funeral services, Father Mike Yadron officiating, will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 4, 2016, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 525 N. Broad St. in Griffith. Burial will follow at Chesterton Cemetery.

Visitation is scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3, at White Funeral Home, 921 W. 45th Ave. in Griffith and one hour prior to service on Thursday at St. Mary Church.

Memorials donations may be made to Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital, 225 E. Chicago Ave., Chicago, IL 60611; or VNA Hospice of Porter County, 2401 Valley Drive, Valparaiso, IN 46383

Arrangements handled by Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, Chesterton.
