Chesterton business leader William E. Mellander died early Tuesday morning, November 8, 2016, in Chesterton.

Mellander was past President and Managing Partner of Wilbar Manufacturing Company. Mellander moved to Chesterton in 1969 with his wife, lifelong Chesterton resident Carolyn (Johnson) Mellander, who was the daughter of longtime Chesterton community leader and historian Howard Johnson.

The son of successful Swedish immigrants, Mellander was born in Chicago in 1938. He was an Army veteran who was stationed in Germany and Turkey during the 1950ís. He attended Texas Tech University, worked in the oilfield and mining industries before moving to Chesterton and joining his father-in-law at Wilbar. With when The Regionís now storied steel industry in itís infancy, he was an early identifier of itís opportunities and he helped build a business that became a catalyst for the growth of steel in Northwest Indiana. He was an inventor, holding multiple patents on roll-micrometer gauges, precision measuring devices that today are used in factories on three continents around the world.

He was preceded in death by his wife Carolyn, brother David, and his parents.

He is survived by his younger brother Stewart of New Castle, Indiana, his son Bill Mellander of Keller, Texas, daughter Kay Schmid of Reston, Virginia, his special partner Susan Harford of Chesterton, and five grandchildren.

Arrangements and burial will be private.

Arrangements are under the direction of White-Love Funeral Home, Chesterton, IN.
