Memorial Service Thursday for Catherine Louise Swenson, 82

Catherine Louise (Cobble) Swenson age 82 of Valparaiso, IN (formerly of Porter/Chesterton), passed away on Sunday, October 16, 2016 at St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago, Indiana, surrounded by her four children.

Catherine was born on June 20, 1934, in East Gary, (Lake Station) Indiana to John and Phyllis (Lafferty) Cobble who preceded her in death.

On November 8, 1952, Catherine married Paul T. Swenson, who preceded her in death on June 21, 2001. Catherine and Paul met as teenagers working at the Indiana Dunes State Park and shared nearly 50 years together.

The heart of Catherine’s life was always her children and grandchildren. She is survived by sons, Peter (Donna) Swenson of Chesterton, Mark Swenson of Everett, Washington; daughters, Emily (Daryl) Bayer of Liberty Township and Paula Swenson of Valparaiso; grandchildren, Elise Bayer, Erica Lo (Jared) Sigler and Kendrick Lo; great-grandchildren Avery and Anderson Sigler. Catherine was the adopted mother of Eric and Winnie Lo of Portage. She will be greatly missed by her constant canine companion, Roo. In addition to her children and grandchildren, Catherine is survived by her brother, Dale (Carole) Cobble and numerous nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by a brother, two sisters and infant son, Eric.

Catherine was a graduate of Portage High School. She started college the year her youngest child started first grade and graduated from Indiana University with a degree in elementary education in 1971, the same year her oldest child graduated from high school. She taught kindergarten at Jones Elementary in Portage for 23 years, where she touched the lives of many children. Catherine will be remembered for her unconditional love for her children and family, her love of flowers, her willingness to help others, and for the inspiring strength she had as she fought against her many illnesses.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, October 20, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. with a memorial visitation from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., at First United Methodist Church, 434 South 2nd Street Chesterton, IN, 46304, with Pastor Terry Rhine officiating.

A memorial visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 19, 2016, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at Edmonds and Evans Funeral home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton, IN 46304. Cremation services provided by Heritage Crematory, Portage, IN.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to First United Methodist Church of Chesterton (Missions) or the Sisters of The Holy Names of Jesus and Mary (Mississippi Ministries), 2911 W. Fort George Wright Drive, Spokane, Washington, 99224-5298.
