Chester S. Maturszak passes away at 88

Chester S. Matuszak, 88, of Porter, Indiana, passed away Thursday, May 5, 2016 in the VNA Hospice Center in Valparaiso.

He was born on July 14, 1927 in Michigan City, to the late Fred and Mary (Kaletha) Matuszak. On September 13, 1947, in Michigan City, he married Winifred J. “Winnie” Matuszak. They were married for 58-years when she preceded him in death on September 30, 2005.

On July 14, 2007, he married to Lorraine M. (Hroma) and she survives.

He was a member of the Merchant Marines during the Korean War. He retired as an IBEW Local 531 electrician and recently received a 65-year membership recognition. He was also a farmer in Union Mills. He loved listening to polka music and enjoyed polka dances and polish food. He was also an avid Jeff Gordon Nascar fan. His hobbies included bowling and crappie fishing. He was a member of the IBEW Local 531 Retiree’s Club, Westville Lion’s Club, Skwiat American Legion Post 451, St. Joseph Young Men’s Society, LaPorte County Row Crop Farmers, St. Mary Catholic Church and Rosary Society in Otis, and a past member of the South Central Children’s Workboard.

He is survived by three sons, Fredrick J. (Donna) of Wanatah, IN, John S. (fiancÄ Janet) of Little Egg Harbor Township, NJ, and Thomas L. (Karen) of Vincennes, IN; one daughter Susan A. Matthews of Springfield, MA; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three step-sons, Charles T., Richard A., and Joseph J. Hroma; one step-daughter, Susan M. Saunders; six step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Kathleen L. Matuszak and two sisters, Lillian L. Smith and Dorothy E. Granacki.

Friends may call at the White-Love Funeral Home, 525 South 2nd Street, Chesterton, from 4 to 6 pm on Sunday, May 8, 2016.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, May 9, 2016 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, Otis, with Father Kevin McCarthy officiating. Burial with Military Honors will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Otis. White-Love Funeral Home, Chesterton, will handle arrangements. Memorial contributions can be made to the Arthur B. & Ethel V.
