Services Saturday for Alphonsus Wiseman, age 93

Alphonsus Wiseman passed away at the VNA Hospice on September 16, 2015 at the age of 93.

Alphonsus was preceded in death by his first wife Margaret Davila Wiseman, parents Leonard and Albertina Wiseman, brother, Donald Wiseman, sister, Margaret Fisher, brother-in-law, Paul Fisher, and sister-in-law, Sandra Wiseman.

When Alphonsus was in the Navy stationed in Los Angeles, CA, he met Margaret Davila. They were married on May 10, 1947 and returned to Chesterton, IN, in 1948. They had seven children.

He is survived by his brother, Thomas Wiseman of Chesterton and lovingly remembered by his children, daughter Linda Wiseman of Eagle River, AK, daughter Mary J. (Charles) Fletcher, Valparaiso, IN, son Nicholas (Charlie) Wiseman, Otis, IN, Leonard (Felicitas) Wiseman, Wylie, TX, Bernadette (John) Siewert, Valparaiso, IN, son Gerard Wiseman, Chesterton, IN, Brenda (Dale) Kowalchuk Everett, WA. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 4 great great-grandchildren.

Alphonsus was born in Chesterton, IN, September 2, 1922, and graduated from Chesterton High School in 1942. He went in to the US Navy after high school. He was in the Navy for 6 years and was a very proud WWII Veteran. He served on both the Atlantic and Pacific side. He served on the USS Greene, USS Carter, USS Columbus, and USS Astoria. He received Asiatic Pacific with Stars, American Area with Stars, African European with Stars, Good Conduct with Stars, Philippine Liberation with Stars, President Unit Citation with one Star, and World War II Victory Medal. Later in life he shared many stories with family and friends.

Alphonsus was employed by US Steel Works in Gary, IN, and retired after 30 years. He enjoyed bowling, watching Notre Dame football and Cubs baseball games, He also enjoyed going to the beach with his grandchildren. They all called him Grandpa Beach.

Visitation will be held on Friday, September 18, 2015, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton, IN, 46304, with a reading led by Chaplin Dean Christianson at 4:00 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, September 19, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 638 N. Calumet Rd., Chesterton, IN, with Father James Meade officiating. Burial will follow at Chesterton Cemetery.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the VNA Hospice Care and Pines Village Center. Thank you for all your kindness and support.
