Services Friday for William 'Bill' Sievert

William (Bill) Sievert, age 86 of Chesterton, IN joined the angels in heaven on Monday, September 7, at VNA Hospice Center in Valparaiso, IN with his family by his side.

He leaves his wife of 57 years, Ruby (Mergl) Sievert; his son Jeff Sievert-PharmD, his daughter-in-law, Karalee (Bugnet) Sievert, his daughter Sherri (Sievert) Neill, his son-in-law Joseph Neill, special family member Tina Ward, his 5 grandchildren; Stephanie Sievert, Emily Sievert, Sean Neill, Michael Neill and Taylor Sievert. He also leaves behind his nephew C.R. Sackman, his niece Virginia (Sackman) Paxson, nephew John Koehler, and a wealth of extended family and friends who he loved dearly.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Judith (Sievert) Ehlers, his sisters Ethel (Sievert) Coslet and Margaret (Koehler) Sackman, his brothers Arthur Koehler and Kenneth Koehler.

Born and raised in Chesterton, Indiana the son of William and Olga Sievert, he was a lifelong resident of Chesterton. Bill graduated from Chesterton High School in 1947 and went on to graduate from Valparaiso University in 1951 where he majored in Chemistry. He served as a Staff Sargent in the U.S. Army from 1951-53. He was stationed at the Army Chemical Center in Maryland. Bill worked in the steel industry for over 40 years and spent 34 years in the Research Department at Inland Steel (now ArcelorMittal), where he held several management positions, the last before retirement being Senior Product Consultant. He co-authored several patents on steel production and finishing as well as contributed to many process improvement initiatives through the years. Bill retired from Inland Steel in 1992. Bill was a lifelong member of St. Johnís United Church in Chesterton, Indiana. He served his church in many ways as a Deacon and member of the Church Council.

Bill will perhaps best be remembered by his love of family and sports. He loved watching his favorite football team, the Green Bay Packers play football. He could also be spotted attending most Chesterton High School basketball games. Bill was an avid golfer, fly fisherman, and New York Yankees fan. He equally enjoyed spending time traveling, listening to Big Band music, dancing with his wife and spending time with his family.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 11, 2015 at St. Johnís United Church, 225 W. Lincoln Avenue, Chesterton, IN 46304. Interment will follow at Graceland Cemetery, Valparaiso, IN. Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 10, 2015 at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton, IN 46304 and at the church on Friday, September 11, 2015 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m. Memorials may be made to St. Johnís or VNA Hospice Center.
