Memorial service Monday for Stephen M. Jandura

Stephen M. Jandura, age 87, passed away on July 8, 2015, in the Villages, Florida. Steve was born in East Chicago, Indiana, on October 16, 1927; grew up in Gary, moving to Florida after retirement.

He was preceded in death by his parents Steve J. and Helen Jandura, brother Richard, sisters-in-law Marian and Geraldine, and nephew Brian.

Steve is survived by his wife, Marlene, of Florida; his sister Helen M. Jandura and brothers, George and John (Betty) Jandura of Chesterton, IN; nephews Richard Jandura, Jr., and Thomas Jandura (Patricia); and nieces Robin Carr, Lynne Armstrong (Doug), and several great nieces and nephews.

A member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Steve attended Holy Trinity grade school and Froebel High School. He entered the U.S. Army in 1945 at age 18 serving in the European theatre - Italy. He was honorably discharged and returned to Gary in 1947.

Steve was appointed Deputy Sheriff, Lake County, Indiana, September 1956. He achieved the rank of captain as he served in the Detective Bureau, headed the Multi-Narcotics Unit, and supervised the Gary Sheriff’s office. He retired from the sheriff’s department after thirty-two years of service, earning numerous commendations.

Steve was a member and Past President of the Fraternal Order of Police, Chris Anton Lodge #125, and a member of the Elks, Lodge #1152 in Hobart, Indiana.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, August 3, 2015, at the Calumet Park Funeral Chapel, 7533 Taft Street, Merrillville, Indiana, at 10:00 a.m., with Rev. Michael Yadron officiating. A time of sharing will take place from 9:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of choice.
