Larry Westergren dies at age 73

The athletic fields will be a little quieter as Larry Westergren lost his battle to merkel cell cancer on Monday, July 20, 2015 at the age of 73. He was born October 19, 1941 in Valparaiso, IN to Harry and Grace (Crouse) Westergren, who preceded him in death. He was married on May 9, 1964 in Chesterton, IN to Alice Fisher who survives of Chesterton, IN.

He is also survived by his son, Jon (Christy) Westergren of Avon, IN, daughter, Mary Ellen (Paul) Tilden of Valparaiso, IN; brothers, Ken (Donna) of Chesterton, IN, Richard (Patsy) of Michigan City, IN and Robert (Julie) Westergren of New Buffalo, MI; sisters, Inez Zane of Chesterton, IN and Phyllis (Dewey) Ward of MI; sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Piekielniak and Wilma (Doug) Hilbish and grandchildren, Patrick, Tessa, Greta and Petra Tilden and Alison, Riley and Brady Westergren.

Larry retired from NIPSCO after 35 years of service and was a lifelong Chesterton resident and member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. He was an avid baseball enthusiast, coach, player and mentor. He enjoyed fishing, bicycling and attending his grandchildren’s sporting events.

Memorial services will be held on Friday, July 24, 2015 at 11:00 am at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 2050 W. 1100 N., Chesterton, IN 46304 with Pastor Erik Bernth officiating. Memorial visitation will be held on Thursday, July 23, 2015 from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton, IN 46304.
