Laura Davis dies at age 88

Former Chesterton resident Laura Pauline Hawkesworth Underwood Davis, age 88, of St. Cloud, Fla., died on January 23, 2013.

Laura was born in Worcester, Ma., on July 14, 1924.

Laura is survived by her husband, Albert Davis, sons Robert James (Cindi Haire), Creighton Walter, Ian Maxwell (Jody) and Peter Bennett (Jeanette), two grandchildren, Gabriel Tristan Underwood and Madelyn Eryn Underwood, her sister, Louise Lee (Orie), three nieces, two nephews and many friends.

Laura is preceded in death by her first husband, Dr. Robert J. Underwood, her parents, Katheryn and Walter Hawkesworth, sister Maggie Engel and granddaughter, Katheryn Ayn Underwood.

After graduating from High School, she entered the Navy, where she served as a Pharmacist Mate 2nd class from 1944 to 1946. In 1951, she graduated from Indiana University with a bachelor degree in nursing.

Laura worked as a nurse for St. Anthony Hospital in Michigan City, Ind., and taught Sunday School and was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary at First United Methodist Church of Chesterton, Ind., for many years. In 1982, after relocating to St. Cloud, Fla., she worked as a charge nurse at Avanti (formerly St. Cloud Healthcare) for 12 years. She also worked as an RN, played piano and read the newspaper to residents at New Dimensions for many years.

After retirement, Laura enjoyed playing the piano at numerous nursing homes around the St. Cloud area, as well as church dinners and other functions as a member of First United Methodist Church of St. Cloud. She was actively involved in PEO, a philanthropic educational organization, where she twice served as their chapter president.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 12, at First United Methodist Church in St. Cloud, Florida. Rev. Mike Briggs will be officiating.
