Josephine M. Janowski, age 91, passed away peacefully at home in Chesterton, Ind., on Saturday, November 30, 2013.

She was born on May 30, 1922, in New Durham Township, Westville, Ind. to Theofil and Anna Bara Hycner, both of whom preceded her in death.

On October 11, 1947 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Otis, Ind., she married Henry A. Janowski, who also preceded her in death.

She is survived by her two sons, Lawrence (Elaine) Janowski of Chesterton, Ind., and Vincent Janowski; two daughters, Monica (David) Sherrard of Atlanta, Ga., and Louann (Andrew) Katzmarek of Chesterton. Also surviving are four granddaughters, Shannon (Sean) Sanders of Glendale, Ariz., Sarah Janowski of Chesterton, Rebekah (Luis) Ramos Molina of Seoul, South Korea, Laurin Katzmarek of Chesterton, one grandson, Brian Katzmarek of Valparaiso, Ind., two great-grandchildren, Brielle and Ben Sanders of Glendale, Ariz., and two sisters, Frances Ostroski of LaPorte, Ind., and Ann Fedder, of Ft. Meade, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her two brothers, Thaddeus J. “Ted” and Chester Hycner.

A Chesterton resident of 66 years, Mrs. Janowski, “Jo” to her friends, was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, where she volunteered on the funeral luncheon committee for many years. She was noted for her baked beans and berry pies. She was an accomplished organic gardener and started Wagon Wheel Herbs to share her love of unusual varieties of herbs. She and her husband Henry provided many families with sweet corn, tomatoes and vegetables from their garden. Prior to her marriage, Mrs. Janowski was a telephone operator at Indiana Bell in Michigan City. She served her country during WWII working at the Kingsbury Ordinance Plant and as a W.A.V.E. in the U.S. Naval Reserves. She served from 1944-1946 at USNAS Bunker Hill, Ind., and Grosse Ile, Mich., as a central office operator. After marriage she devoted herself to her family. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 638 N. Calumet Rd, Chesterton, Ind., on Thursday, December 5, 2013 at 10:00 a.m., with Father James Meade officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Patrick Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4, at the White-Love Funeral Home, 525 South 2nd St., Chesterton, Ind. A prayer service will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday evening at the funeral home.
