Services set for Ernest Powers

Porter resident Ernest O. Powers, Jr., 86, died Sunday, March 2, 2014.

He was born May 22, 1927, in Chandler, Okla., to Ernest Oda Sr. and Nina Pearl (Adkins) Powers, who preceded him in death.

He was married to Lena (Barnes) Powers, who in 1988 also preceded him in death.

He is survived by his son, Gerald (Linda) Powers of Kentucky; his step-son, Dewey (Pamela) VanFleet of Porter; grandchildren, Daniel Powers, Alyxandra Powers, Beth VanFleet, Jeff VanFleet, Shannon Powers, Jeff (Whitney) Powers, and Stephen Powers; great-grandchildren, Owen and Ava Powers and Dylan and Zachary VanFleet; a sister, Karen (Stanley) Caswell of Kentucky; and his longtime companion, Anne Pfister.

He was preceded in death by his son, Charles “Sam” Powers; a sister, Elwanda McIntosh; and brother-in-law, Ralph McIntosh.

Ernest was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served during the Korean War. He worked at National Steel, Midwest Division, in structural repair and central maintenance and was a member of the Steelworkers Union. Ernest was also a member of New Life Wesleyan Church in Chesterton and was active with the Bonner Senior Center in Portage.

Funeral services, the Pastor Allen Wright, officiating, are scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday, March 6, at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway in Chesterton.

Visitation is scheduled from 11 a.m. until the time of service at 1 p.m.. Burial will follow at Chesterton Cemetery.
