Rita I. Schallon, age 91 of Chesterton, passed away on Monday, May 5, 2014, at the VNA Hospice Center in Valparaiso, Ind.

She was born on December 30, 1922, in Gary, Ind., to Alfred and Edna Barfoot Krabbenhoft, both of whom preceded her in death.

She is survived by her three children: Barbara (Bill) Davidson of Viera, Fla., Nancy Schallon of Chesterton and James Schallon of Chesterton, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Rita was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Chester and brothers: Alfred, Norman and Robert Krabbenhoft.

Rita was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and the Chesterton Woman’s Club. She was well known for her sewing and was often asked if she would like to sew professionally. She always declined because she preferred to sew dresses and suits for her children as they were growing up. She would knit, crochet and quilt for hours, hobbies which her children also benefited from. She also enjoyed working in her garden.

Services will be held at a later date at the Chesterton Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to the Independent Cat Society, 4061 S County Line Rd., Westville, IN, 46391, and the VNA Hospice Center, 501 Marquette St., Valparaiso, IN, 46383.
