Mary Elizabeth Gill Dold services Friday

Mary Elizabeth Gill Dold passed away Monday, July 22, 2013.

She was born, November 27, 1916 in North Salem, Indiana.

In 1939 Mary Elizabeth Gill married James William Dold. He preceded her in death in December of 2004.

At the time of her death, Mary Dold was a resident at the Pines Village Retirement Home in Valparaiso, Indiana; however, she had lived in Chesterton, Indiana, since 1943.

After moving to Chesterton in 1943, Mary taught at Jackson High School where she taught for two years followed by 13 years at Chesterton High School High School and then 20 years at Portage High School.

As a teacher at Chesterton High School, she chaired the Business Department, sponsored an award winning school newspaper, “Scoop,” served as a class sponsor and sponsor for the cheerleaders and the booster club.

During her tenure at Portage High School, Mrs. Dold chaired the English Department, sponsored the “news bureau” and started a school literary magazine.

Prior to her retirement in 1979, Mrs. Dold also spent several summers teaching at the Indiana University Journalism Institute in Bloomington, Indiana.

Mary graduated from Central Normal College in 1938 with licenses to teach English, Business Education and Social Studies.

Her husband James Dold was the former principal at Washington Township High School, near Valparaiso, Ind.

Mary Dold is survived by four nieces, two great and five great-great nieces and nephews. She also leaves cousins and special friends.

Mary remained a member of the United Methodist Church in Chesterton, Ind.

Visitation will be at Edmonds Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton, Ind., on Friday, July 26, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be a brief service at 1 p.m.

Memorials are asked to The Porter County Community Foundation Endowment Fund in the names of James W. and Mary Gill Dold.
