Gayle S. Polakowski, age 67 of Chesterton, Ind., passed away on Saturday, August 16, 2014.

She was born on December 24, 1946 in Valparaiso, IN, to Charles and Virginia (Maguire) Bateman.

She was married to John N. Polakowski on April 12, 1969, who survives of Chesterton.

She is also survived by her son, Erik (Ann) Polakowski of Las Vegas, NV; daughter, Sara (Jack) Sharp of Ft. Walton Beach, FL; grandchildren, Tristan and Hayden Polakowski and Erin and Kyler Sharp; cousins, Douglas Bateman of Granger, IN and Michael Maguire of Philadelphia, PA; aunt, Marilyn (Jim) Snodgrass of Urbana, VA, sisters-in law, Joanne (Don) Cade of Port of the Islands, FL and Molly Rakochy of Gary, IN, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Barry Bateman.

Gayle served the Town of Chesterton as its Clerk-Treasurer for 25 years and retired on December 31, 2013. She was a longtime Rotarian, Past President of Chesterton/Porter Rotary Club and received an Honorary Membership in June 2013. She was a Duneland Chamber of Commerce board member from 1987 through 1994. She was past president of Indiana Association of Cities and Towns, Northern Indiana Public Transportation Commission and Chesterton Soccer Club and vice chairman of the Northwest Indiana Regional Planning Commission. Gayle was a lifelong area resident and a member of First United Methodist Church. For over 20 years she served as the Republican vice-committeeman of Precinct 3 in Westchester Township and was a member of Beta Gamma Upsilon Sorority, Alpha Rho chapter in Chesterton.

She received many awards including the 1990 Duneland Chamber of Commerce Athena Award, Chamber Community Leadership Award in 1998, Outstanding Rotarian of the Year 1991-1992, a Paul Harris Fellow of the Rotary, and received the Ed Pearson Memorial Award in 1992. The NWI Times honored her in 1998 as one of Porter County’s 10 Influential Women of the Year.

Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 6, 2014, at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton, IN, 46304, with Rev. Terry Rhine officiating. Memorial visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.
