Elmer E. Johnson dies at age 100, service Monday, June 23

Elmer E. Johnson, age 100 of Liberty Twp., passed away at home on Wednesday, June 18, 2014.

He was born on April 12, 1914, in Chicago, Ill., the son of the late Fred and Hannah (Lundquist) Johnson.

Elmer graduated from Liberty Twp. High School in 1932 and retired from U.S. Steel-South Works-in 1979. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Chesterton for 55 years.

On June 16, 1940 in Valparaiso, Ind., Elmer married Marjorie A. Gentz who preceded him in death in 2013.

He is survived by his children, Patricia Ann (R. Daniel) Olson of Valparaiso, Philip E. (Sandra) Johnson of Valparaiso, Peggy (the late Perry) Trowbridge of Valparaiso, and Bruce E. (Denise) Johnson of Chesterton; 10 grandchildren, Eric (Elaine) Olson, Tricia (Jay) Drew, Joanna Maas, Jane (Jeff) Detweiler, Jill (Brandon) Killion, Thomas Johnson, Jennifer (Nikos) Stathopoulos, Kelli Johnson, Katie Johnson and Matthew Johnson, 23 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law LaVerne Gustafson of Valparaiso. He was also preceded in death by a great-grandchild, two sisters and two brothers.

Elmer was a devoted husband to his wife, Marge, of almost 73 years. During her years following a stroke, he would sing her to sleep nightly. He followed the lives of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren closely, attending the graduation of his grandson, Matthew only two weeks ago. His devotion to his God was present in every area of his life and he loved serving God in his church with singing, teaching and leadership. His family and friends enjoyed honoring him at a 100 year birthday party on April 12. He will be greatly missed by many who loved him.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, June 23, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at Moeller Funeral Home 104 Roosevelt Rd., Valparaiso, with Rev. Larry Starett officiating. Burial will follow at Chesterton Cemetery.

Visitation will be Sunday from 1:00-4:00 p.m.
