Edmund J. Kinel dies at age 93

Edmund J. Kinel, age 93 of Valparaiso, IN, passed away on October 6, 2014. He was born on October 26, 1920.

He is survived by his five children: David (Sue) Kinel, Karen (Gary) Duvall, Brian (Angela) Kinel, Susan (Terry) Wright and Kevin (Barbara) Kinel and by nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Catherine Kinel and his sisters Ann Alter and Frances Krengel.

Ed grew up in East Chicago, Indiana and graduated from Bishop Noll Institute and the Illinois College of Optometry where he earned a Doctor of Optometry degree and served as the Sears optometrist in downtown Gary and then at the Southlake Mall in Merrillville from it’s opening until his retirement 25 years later.

Ed served in the U.S. Navy during WW II, earning the rank of lieutenant jg. He was stationed aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Randolph in the Pacific Fleet and saw action in many of the major campaigns in that theater, including the Battle of Midway, Guadalcanal, Luzon and others, and was aboard his carrier when it was sent steaming towards Japan when the war abruptly ended.

Ed was a life member of many organizations, including the Toastmasters, the American Legion, the VFW, the Moose, the Elks and the Eagles and enjoyed many of his retirement years attending activities at these clubs. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends and perhaps fondly remembered best for his ever willingness to help out wherever needed.

In accordance with Ed’s wishes there will be no visitation or funeral service. He has requested that his remains be cremated and his ashes scattered. Professional arrangements are being handled through Moeller Funeral Home, Valparaiso, IN.
