Dr. Karl H. Speckhard, 87, of Cottage Grove, Minn., formerly of Valparaiso, Ind., Wisconsin Rapids, Wisc., and Chesterton, Ind., died June 9, 2014. He is former Superintendent of the Duneland School Corporation.

He married Marjorie Ruth Hausrath on August 30, 1947 in Ohio; they have six children.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Marjorie, his brothers Jerry (Jo) of Valparaiso, Ind., Tom of Wausau, Wis., Mark (Myrna) of Phoenix, Az., John of Houston, Texas, and Luther of Minneapolis, Minn.; his sisters Marian Malotky of Los Angeles, Ca., and Judy Huener of Valparaiso; two sons, David (Sharon) of Bellevue, Ia., and Tom (Marci) of Cottage Grove, Minn., and daughters Judith (George) Shibata of Aurora, Ohio, Susan (Kevin) Campbell of Mishawaka, Ind., Sandra (Scott) Gage of Green Bay, Wis., and Kathleen (Ray) Miklius of Cincinnati, Ohio; 29 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter O. and Louise A. Speckhard, his sister, Marjorie, and his brother, Walt.

He was born in Battle Creek, Mich., raised in Clintonville, Wis., served in Korea just after World War II, graduated from Valparaiso University where he majored in Physical Education and played football, and received masters and doctoral degrees in Education from Indiana University. He taught math and coached football at Portage HS, served as principal at Boone Grove Schools, and as superintendent at Madison-Grant and Duneland Schools.

He was an ardent Republican, Packer fan, bridge player, and golfer. After retirement, he and Marjorie moved to a lake house in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisc., although they spent winters in St. Augustine, Fla. After 12 years they returned to Valparaiso, and most recently moved to be near a son in the Minneapolis area.

A memorial service will be held July 5, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1700 Monticello Park Drive, Valparaiso, Ind., with visitation at 1p.m. and a reception in the narthex after the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials may be given to Christ the Lord Lutheran Church, 9998 90th Street South, Cottage Grove, MN, 55016.
