Donald Lyda dies at age 74

Former Chesterton resident Donald E. Lyda, age 74, of Port Saint Lucie, Florida, passed away Friday, June 14, 2013, at his residence.

He was born May 16, 1939, in Crocker, Ind., to James H. and Pauline (Lively) Lyda, both of whom preceded him in death.

He was a resident of Chesterton, Ind., until five years ago when he moved to Port Saint Lucie, Fla.

On November 28, 1959, in Chesterton, Ind., he married Ruth (Lenburg) Lyda, who survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Karen (Bino) Handley of Dora, Ala., and Lisa Lyda of West Palm Beach, Fla; two grandchildren, Tim (Kourtney) Handley and Karissa Handley; and a great-granddaughter, Ella Handley.

He was preceded in death by his parents and step-father, Russell Timmerman; two brothers, James Lyda and Robert Lyda; and a sister, Mildred Carr.

Don retired from US Steel in 1984 and was a veteran of the United States Army.

Gravesite service will take place in Chesterton Cemetery at 11:30 a.m. on July 5, 2013. Immediately following the service will be a luncheon at St. Patrickís Catholic Church chapel hall in Chesterton, Ind.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks memorial donations be made to St. Jude Childrenís Research Hospital or to the American Lung Association.
