Daniel Joseph Flaherty dies at 65

Daniel Joseph Flaherty, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, passed away on Wednesday, November 26, 2014. He was 65.

He was born October 3, 1949, in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Paul Patrick Flaherty and Eileen (McGlynn) Flaherty.

He was married to Judith (Wujcik) Flaherty, who preceded him in death on June 28, 2003, after 25 years of marriage.

Dan is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Keara and David Ide, of Barrington, Ill., and three grandchildren, Charles (age 3) and twins Henry and Margaret (age 8 months); brothers and sisters; Molly (Michael) Haas of Carmel, Ind., James of the Philippines, Roy of Chesterton, Ind., Mary Katherine Hamilton of Chesterton, Paul (Janet) of Encino, Calif., Eileen (Gregory) Lee of East Waterboro, Maine, Marjorie (Thomas) Potter of Chesterton; numerous nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and nephew, James McGlynn Haas.

Dan graduated from Chesterton High School in 1967 and attended the University of Detroit. He joined the U.S. Army in 1968 and served in the Vietnam War as a scout dog handler, where he was wounded and received the Purple Heart. He was a graduate of Loyola University of Chicago. Before retiring to Myrtle Beach, Dan had a long career as a technical service/sales engineer for the rubber industry. He was an avid golfer and fisherman. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

An Irish Wake will be held from Noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, December 13, at Gelsosomos in Chesterton, Ind.
