Phyllis Sutherland dies at age 71

Phyllis K. Sutherland, age 71 of Portage, Ind., formerly of Chesterton, passed away Sunday, October 21, 2012 in Valparaiso, Ind.

She was born November 29, 1940 in Valparaiso, Ind., to Robert and Helen (Irwin) Hyde, both of whom preceded her in death.

Phyllis was married on November 16, 1962 in Miller, Ind., to Donald Sutherland, who survives of Portage, Ind.

Phyllis is also survived by her children, Tammy (Pat) Niesen of Woodridge, Ill., Brian (Michele) Sutherland of Valparaiso, and Brenda (Scott) Fleming of Portage; step-daughter, Terry (Stan) Kilarski of Two Creeks, Wis.; sisters, Marcia Gaston, Lucia Hyde and Connie Hyde; grandchildren, Chris and Katie Niesen, Brendan Sutherland and Kristy, Stanley and Marcus Kilarski; cousin, Bill Strand; and many nieces and nephews.

Phyllis was a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Portage. She worked for 25 years for JoAnn Fabrics. Phyllis enjoyed sewing, baking and spending time with her grandchildren.

Private family services will be held at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton, with Rev. Jane Aicher officiating.
