Donald “Turtle” Lee Land of Knox died Friday, Nov. 11, 2011. He was 80.
Born Feb. 22, 1931 in Carbondale, Ill., he was the son of Raymond and Virgie
(Knight) Land, both of whom preceded him in death. On Dec. 27, 1962 in Crown
Point, he married Emalena Land, who also preceded him in death.
He is survived by daughters Anna (husband Homer) Beem of Knox and Karen
(Glenn) Zaideman of Porter; sister Margaret (Harry) Cole of Knox; brother
Franklin (wife Emma) Land of Knox; sister Romalea Katherine (Harold)
Brightwell of Dyer; granddaughters Randi Beem of Knox and Ashley Zaideman of
Porter; and grandsons Sinjin Beem of Knox and Zachary Zaideman of Porter.
A labor union carpenter, he was an Army and Navy veteran. He was a member of
the Knox Masonic Lodge, Orak Shrine, Knox Order of Eastern Star past worthy
patron, Scottish Rite of South Bend and Labor Union Local 41 and Carpenter
Union #599 of Hammond.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by siblings
James Land, Richard Land, Roscoe Land, Lillian Reames, William Land, and
Clara Joanne Ard.
Services were held on Monday, Nov. 14 at the Braman & Son Memorial Chapel in
Knox. Burial was in Eagle Creek Cemetery, Knox.
