Charles Ray Self, age 82, of Portage, Ind., passed away on Thursday, April
21, 2011 at Valparaiso Care and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born on April 8, 1929 in French Lick, Ind., to Thomas and Nora
(Collins) Self who both preceded him in death.
Charles was also preceded in death by his wife, Jean (Nicholson) Self in
2005.
Charles is survived by ten children, Angela (Michael) Rippe of Porter;
Althea (J.R.) Long of Crestview, Fla.; Anita Webb of Ragland, Ala.; Sherie
(Tom) Gilbert of Michigan City; Norman (Beth) Self of Chesterton; Bill Self
of LaPorte; Alan Self of Tennessee; Darrin Self of Wanatah; Lisa (Danny)
Robinson of Valparaiso; and Sara (Will) Long of Hobart; as well as many
grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Charles was preceded in death by a son Anthony Self, two brothers, Rollie
and Roy and a sister, Ruby.
Charles was a USA Army Veteran. He was a lifelong farmer who retired in 1982
from the teamsters Local Union #142.
A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, April 27, at 6:00 p.m. at
Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home Portage Chapel, 6941 Central Ave., Portage,
with Rev Kenneth Dishman officiating.
A Memorial Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 27, from 4:00 p.m. until
time of Service at 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Cremation was handled by
Heritage Crematory, Portage.
