Bernard Gawronski dies at 72

Bernard Gawronski, age 72 of Chesterton, passed away Sunday, January 30,2011 at Porter Hospital Valparaiso.

He was born July 8, 1938 in Calumet City to Andrew and Adeline Gawronski, both of whom preceded him in death.

On September 18, 1993 in Kouts he married Mary Barnes Gawronski who survives in Chesterton.

Also surviving are his sons Gregory (Francis) Gawronski of Quincy, Ill. and Michael (Michael Ann) Gawronski of Chesterton, three grandchildren; Melinda, Gregory and Riley and a sister Linda (Mark) Spears of California.

Bernie also is survived by a step son, Matthew (Jenniffer) Spiess of Valparaiso, and step grandchildren Katie, Alex, Heather and Lauren.

His father-in-law Robert S. Barnes of Valparaiso also survives.

He is preceded in death by his first wife, Shirley, who passed away in 1986 and his mother in law Armeta Barnes.

Gawronski was a millwright and pipefitter for Inland Steel for 32 years. He was a volunteer fireman in Liberty Township for 15 years and was one of the founding members of the Porter County Amateur Radio Club. He worked with the Porter County Emergency Management, was a CERTS Instructor, participated in the Porter County Sky Warn, was an EOC and was the main person to call the weather service to let them know storms were coming.

Bernie was honored with a Hero’s Award for Outstanding Citizenship from the Greater Portage Chamber of Commerce. He once pulled a person from a burning vehicle after it had crashed into a ditch. He also enjoyed family camping trips when his children were young.

The funeral service will be held Thursday, February 3, 2011 at 8 p.m. at the White-Love Funeral Home, 525 South 2nd Street, Chesterton.

The family will receive friends on Thursday from 4-8 p.m. prior to the service.

Memorials may be given to the VNA Horton Hospice Center in Valparaiso.
