Sophie “Sandy” Ulozas (nee Monchilovich), of Valparaiso, age 89, died Wednesday, October 20, 2010 in Valparaiso.

She was born May 20, 1921 in Gary, the daughter of Walter and Frances (Shubrick) Monchilovich, who preceded her in death.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Anthony.

She is survived by daughters, Cheryl (Ken) Watson of Valparaiso and Jan (Bob) Szalmasagi of Chesterton; daughter-in-law, Kathy Ulozas; brothers, John Monchilovich of Hobart and Walter Muncie of Porter; sister, Anne Zborowski of Portage; seven grandchildren, Theresa, Ron, Mary, Ashley, Ryan, Scott and Kim; and six great-grandchildren; Lana House, whom she loved as a daughter; many nieces and nephews; and very special caregivers and friends at Whispering Pines.

She was preceded in death by sons, Tony and Ronald.

Sophie was a lifelong area resident and was a member of South Haven Christian Church. She was a member of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary in Portage and a former member of War Mothers. She volunteered for the Hobart Senior Center.

Funeral services, Pastor Don Miller officiating, are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway in Chesterton. Burial will follow at Calumet Park Cemetery in Merrillville.

Visitation is scheduled from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 22, at Edmonds & Evans.

Memorials may be made to the Maple and Linden Units of Whispering Pines or to the VNA Foundation of Porter County for Hospice Care.
