Services set for Dorothy Nance

Portage resident Dorothy “Betty” Nance, 88, died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010, at Porter Valparaiso Hospital Campus.

She was born July 29, 1921, in Chicago, the daughter of August E. and Magnhild (Hedstrom) Soderstrom, who preceded her in death.

In 1998 she was also preceded in death by her husband, Russell Nance.

She is survived by two sons, Robert (Linda) Nance of Portage and Michael (Karen) Nance of Crown Point; a son-in-law, Carl Peterson, formerly of Chesterton, now of Portage; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Linda Peterson, in 2002; and by her grandson, Jay Peterson, in 2007.

Betty was a 1937 graduate of Lew Wallace High School in Gary, where she was valedictorian. From 1969 until 1998 she was a member of the Marquette Yacht Club Ladies Auxiliary. She worked for 42 years as secretary and bookkeeper for Superior Construction Company.

Funeral services, Pastor Erik Bernth officiating, are scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 8, at White-Love Funeral Home, 525 S. Second St. in Chesterton. Burial to follow at McCool Cemetery in Portage.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 7, at White-Love.
