Service set for Virginia Adams Maguire Bateman

Virginia Adams Maguire Bateman of Chesterton passed away Saturday, July 10, 2010. She was 89.

Born in Newark, N.J. on January 1, 1921, she was the daughter of Lincoln and Myrtie (Adams) Maguire. On June 28, 1944 in Chesterton, she married Charles T. Bateman, who preceded her in death in 1987.

Virginia retired as a teacher and librarian having worked in the Chesterton, Portage and Washington Township Schools. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Chesterton, the Beta Gamma Upsilon Sorority, Chesterton Woman’s Club and the Delta Kappa Gamma Teachers Sorority. Virginia spent 20 years living in Arizona where she was president of her homeowners association.

She is survived by her daughter Gayle (husband John) Polakowski of Chesterton; sister Marilyn (James) Snodgrass of Urbanna, Va.; grandchildren Erik (wife Ann) Polakowski of Las Vegas, Nev., Sara (Jack) Sharp of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., Vanessa Colvin of Portage and Matthew (Becky) Bateman of Goshen, Ind.; and nine great grandchildren, Tristan and Hayden Polakowski, Christopher, Cassidy and Barry Colvin, Erin and Kyler Sharp and Gretchen and Lucas Bateman.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Barry and twin brother Theodore Maguire.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 13 at 11 a.m. at the Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton, with Pastor Chris Newman-Jacobs officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. on Tuesday until the time of service. Memorials for Virginia may be made to the American Cancer Association or the American Lung Association.
