Service set for Ben Kosmatka

Chesterton resident Ben L. Kosmatka of Chesterton passed away on Friday, August 27, 2010 at his home. He was 95.

Born on Oct. 26, 1914 in Chesterton, he was the son of John and Jennie (Stachowiak) Kosmatka, both of whom preceded him in death. He is survived by nieces and nephews Lou Ann Oberle, Richard Kosmatka, Sharon Corneil, James Kosmatka, John Kosmatka, Joanne Unbuhaun, Ruth Norlington, Elinor Waterman, Irene Walker, Jerrolyn Heck, Donald Kosmatka, Joyce Dietz and Gayle Kosmatka.

Ben is preceded in death by brothers Walter, Raymond, Lewis, Clem, Sylvester and Clarence; and sisters Agnes, Isabelle and Irene.

Ben was a member of the Coast Guard from December, 1942 to May, 1946 and was very involved with the Banta Center in Valparaiso. He also delivered Meals on Wheels for 17 years and was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, where he was an usher.

The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 31 at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 638 North Calumet Road, Chesterton with Father James Meade officiating. The burial will be at Chesterton Cemetery. The family will receive friends today, Monday, August 30 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the White-Love Funeral Home, 525 S. 2nd St., Chesterton. There will also be a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to St. Patrick Catholic Church, Banta Center and Meals on Wheels.
