Mary Margaret Chellberg of Lafayette, Ind. died at 7:53 p.m. Friday, Jan. 1, 2010, at Clarian Arnett Hospital in Lafayette. She was 80.

She was born May 28, 1929, in Camden, Ind., the daughter of the late Ray and Nelle Jenkins Quinn.

She graduated from Camden High School in 1947 and received a B.A. in sociology from Franklin College in 1951 and a M.S. in education from Indiana University in the 1970s.

In 1950 she married Hal J. Goodwin, and in 1962, the couple divorced. In 1982, she married Rev. Walter M. Chellberg, a retired pastor of Augsburg Church in Porter.

Mary Chellberg was an elementary teacher in the East Gary, Battle Ground and Logansport school systems. The last 23 years of her career were at Hillcrest Elementary School in Delphi before retiring in 1989.

She was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Delta Zeta sorority, Camden Women’s Literary Club and the Indiana Retired Teachers Association. She enjoyed reading, facilitating Bible study groups, and spending time with family and friends.

She is survived by her husband; sons Jeffrey Goodwin (wife Lorna) of Indianapolis and Patrick Goodwin (Robin) of Atlanta, Ga.; stepdaughters Carol Peterson (husband Randy) of Omaha, Neb., Sandra Uden (Rex) and Pamela Golden (James), of Paxton, Ill., and Mary Hernandez (Oscar) of Bluefield, W. Va.; stepson John Chellberg (Kathy) of Antioch, Ill.; and brother Timothy Quinn (Elaine) of Camden.

Also surviving are eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, 22 step-grandchildren and 26 step great-grandchildren. Mary Margaret was preceded in death by a brother, Dr. Edward D. Quinn, and a half sister, Vera Quinn Walker.

The visitation and funeral service were held Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Lafayette, with Pastor David Doan officiating. A graveside service was held on Tuesday at the Camden Cemetery.
