James William Hale dies at 71

James William Hale died March 19, 2010 in Gettysburg, Pa. He was 71.

He was born Aug. 11, 1938 in Ashland, Ky., to Chandler and Erma Lee (Clifton) Hale, who preceded him in death, as did his sister, Carol (Hale) Wright.

He served in the Army in Germany, in Texas, and at the Redstone Arsenal in Alabama, where he was involved in missile maintenance. He attended Ashland Junior College and Indiana University Northwest, where he majored in sociology.

He was a supervisor at Inland Steel in East Chicago for more than 30 years in both steelmaking and coke production, winning many awards for inventions that improved efficiency.

He lived in Northwest Indiana locations including Gary, Portage, East Chicago, and most recently Valparaiso. He was a hard worker who loved books and words, and taught those values to his sons.

He is survived by sons James Clifton Hale (wife Dr. Susan Russell) of Gettysburg, Jonathan Allen Hale (Janet Winandy) of Valparaiso, and Matthew Lee Hale of Propsect, Ky.; grandchildren Samuel of Gettysburg, Meagan and Aaron of Valparaiso and Sophia, Brigitte, and Ava, of Prospect, Ky.; former wife Barbara (Stone) Hale of Valparaiso; niece Vicki (Wright) James of Ashland; nephew Paul Wright of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; and several cousins.
