Chesterton resident Herbert Sterner, age 82, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2010 at
home with his loving family by his side.
He was born September 23, 1928, in Duquesne, Pa., the son of Charles W. and
Pauline E. (Gaffney) Sterner, who preceded him in death.
Herbert was married to Elizabeth (Liscinsky) Sterner, who survives in
Herbert is also survived by his son, Martin (Diane) Shields of Irwin, Pa.;
daughters, Leona Miner of Valparaiso, Linda (Ronald) Arndt of Chesterton,
and Darlene (Gregory) Peters of Porter; sisters, Joan Steele of McKeesport,
Pa., and Donna (Forbes) Peat and Kaye (Darryl) Byers, both of Irwin, Pa.; 15
grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son, William Shields; daughter, Katherine
Emigh; brother, Wendall Sterner; and son-in-law, Dwight Miner.
Herbert worked as a steelworker for Midwest Steel, before retiring in 1990.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, serving during the Korean
Conflict and a member of the VFW Post 2511 and American Legion Post 170.
Herbert was also an avid gardener and enjoyed fishing and hunting,
traveling, spending time with family, and going to the Blue Chip. He was an
avid Steelers and Nascar fan.
The family would like to thank the Porter County VNA Hospice Center for the
care they provided during Mr. Sternerís illness.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, at Edmonds &
Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton.
Visitation is scheduled from 12 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, until the time of
service. Cremation will be performed by Heritage Crematory in Portage.
