Fred Compass service set

Porter resident Fred E. Compass passed away Monday, April 12, 2010 in Valparaiso. He was 90.

Born July 5, 1919 in Crown Point, he was the son of Louis and Hattie (Drager) Compass. He was married to Dorothy (Kubick) Compass, who preceded him in death in 1991.

Fred is survived by his daughter, Lynn Markley (husband Paul) of Frankton, Ind.; grandchildren, Kirsten Markley, Eric Markley (wife Amber) and Sarah Markley; and companion, Irma Bauer Foster.

Fred was a lifelong area resident. He was a member of Augsburg Lutheran Church in Porter, VFW Post #2511 in Porter, and the Sundowners. Fred formerly worked for U.S. Steel in Furnace Labor and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 16 at 11 a.m. at Augsburg Lutheran Church, 100 N. Mineral Springs Road, Porter, with Rev. Eric Bernth officiating. Burial will follow at Chesterton Cemetery, Chesterton. Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 15 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton. Visitation will also be held on Friday, April 16 from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church. Memorials may be made to the VNA Horton Hospice Center or to the American Cancer Society.
