Ray Manis dies at 80

Ray D. Manis, 80, of Franklin, formerly of Chesterton, passed away Friday March 6, 2009 at Franklin United Methodist Community, Franklin, Ind.

He was born June 24, 1928 in Argos, the son of Ray C. and Dorothy (Shaw) Manis.

He is survived by his wife Jacqueline Hudkins Manis, of Franklin; two sons, Patrick (Dawn) Manis, of Franklin, and Michael (Terry) Manis of Newland, N.C.; a daughter, Kathleen (Joe) Erickson, of Franklin; eight grandchildren, Kim (Wally) Hayes, Beverly Manis, Bo (Rhiannon) Manis, Jake Manis, Jeremy Manis, Paige and Allison Erickson, two great-granddaughters, Annabelle Hayes and Ellie Hayes.

Ray was a graduate of Culver High School and McNeese State College, having attended Valparaiso University, Ball State and Purdue graduate school, later in life. He coached basketball and taught math for 30 years. He was an Athletic Director for another 16 years. He was Chesterton High School Boys Basketball Coach from 1971-1976. He was honored as Coach of the year in the Northern Conference (Rensselaer), Central Indiana Conference (Elwood), Hoosier Hills Conference (Bedford) and Duneland Conference (Chesterton). He was twice named Athletic Director of the year in District V in 1987 and 1988.

Ray was a 68 year member of the United Methodist Church where he served as a Sunday School teacher, Administrative Board, Trustee and usher. He enjoyed playing golf, restoring antiques and was an avid sports fan, especially of the Chicago Cubs.

Funeral services were at noon today in the M.C. Smith Funeral Home in Knox. Interment was at Crown Hill Cemetery, Knox.

A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 12 at Grace United Methodist Church, Franklin. Visitation will be at 6 p.m. until time of service.

Memorials may be given to Franklin United Methodist Community or the Grace United Methodist Church in Franklin.
