Chesterton resident Opal Carney, 82, died Friday, Oct. 23, 2009.
She was born on Dec. 17, 1926, in Hodgenville, Ky., the daughter of Robert
and Lillie Skaggs, who preceded her in death.
On Dec. 1, 1945, she married Raymond Carney, who in 2003 also preceded her
in death.
She is survived by her sons, Gary (Mary Lou) Carney of Chesterton and Larry
(Trixie) Carney of Valparaiso; daughters, Diania (Wallace) Buchholt of
Scottsdale, Ariz., and Vickie (Joe Ed) Moore of Sparta, Tenn.; eight
grandchildren, Amy (Kirk) Redman, Brett (Stacy) Carney, Christine (Sean)
McConnell, Scarlet (Ryan) Spain, Fawn (Don) Staerkel, Lance (Heidi) Wallace,
Kyler Moore, and Kaci Moore; 17 great-grandchildren; a brother, Emmitt
(Dorothy) Skaggs; and a sister, Helen (Charlie) Schilling.
Opal was a loving wife and mother and a pillar of strength devoted to her
family. She enjoyed taking care of her home, gardens, and yard.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28, at First
Christian Church, 1507 Glendale Blvd. in Valparaiso. Interment will follow
at Chesterton Cemetery.
Visitation is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27, at Edmonds &
Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway in Chesterton.
