John H. York dies at 72

Former Chesterton resident John H. York, 72, of Linton, passed away at 2:35 a.m. Monday 11, 2009 at Regional Hospital in Terre Haute.

He was born June 23, 1936 in Linton, the son of John William and Marcille L. (Weitzel) York, both of whom preceded him in death.

He was preceded in death by his wife Ethel “Iona” Oliver York.

He is survived by two daughters, Jennie Dutcher of Chesterton and Lisa (John) Akers of Valparaiso, a son, Wesley (Beth) York of Chesterton; nine grandchildren, Shawn, Mark, Tiffany, Erica, Mike, Marci, Matt, John and Brittany; four great-grandchildren, Jacob, Bruce, Summer, and Shaelin; a brother, Eugene York of La Crescenta, Calif; two sisters, Marlene Scharber of Hopkins, Minn. and Marilyn Prichard of Portage; a special friend, Jane Head of Linton and many nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by three brothers, George, William and Edward York.

John retired from LTV Steel in East Chicago, where he worked as a machinist and later retired as a door greeter at Wal-Mart, was a member of the Linton Church of Christ, was an avid bowler and the best fisherman.

Funeral services, Jerry Carmichael officiating, will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 15 at Welch & Cornett Funeral Home in Linton. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery.

Friends may call from 5-9 p.m. Thursday and at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
