James E. Golden dies at 94

James E. Golden, age 94 of Michigan City, passed away peacefully August 22, 2009 at LaPorte Hospital.

He was born July 29, 1915 in Highland Park, Ill.

In February 1934 in Highland Park, Ill., he married his childhood sweetheart Catherine, who preceded him in death in 2002.

He was the devoted Irish father of Sherry (Gene) Schlickman, James Jr. (Sue) Golden, Valerie Golden, and Julie (Tom) Niepokoj, all of whom survive.

He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren all of whom were the love of his life, enjoying all their adventures and escapades. James is remembered as a dear brother to Dorothy (Bill) Hunter of Downers Grove, Ill., and Robert Golden (deceased) and a generous uncle, and supportive to many friends.

James served in the United States Navy from 1941 to 1945, stationed in Oakland, Calif. He served many years in the Post Office as Supervisor in Highland Park, and then in Gary, Ind., then retiring in Beverly Shores, Ind. His enduring faith kept him strong and he supported St. Ann of the Dunes in Beverly Shores for several years.

James was an avid reader, an armchair traveler, geography expert, fisherman, golfer and devoted Chicago Bears and Notre Dame fan. This world will miss him.

A Mass of Christian Burial, Fr. David Ryan officiating, will be at 11 a.m Tuesday, August 25, at St. Ann of the Dunes Catholic Church, 433 W. Golfwood Rd., Beverly Shores. Interment will follow at Swan Lake Memorial Gardens, Michigan City.

Visitation will be Tuesday, August 25 from 9 a.m. until time of services at 11 a.m. at the church.
