Hilary H. Fish, a longtime resident of Chesterton, passed away April 13,
2009 at home.
He was born September 14, 1934 in East Chicago, IN.
He is survived by his brother, three nieces, two nephews, six grandnieces
and nephews, and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother.
A longtime resident of Chesterton, he worked for Encyclopedia Britannica
Films in Chicago prior to attending Indiana University. He earned a Bachelor
of Science degree there in 1966, and began to teach in the Portage School
System in 1967. He taught science, mostly biology, there until his
retirement. He was past President of the Portage Association of Teachers and
a former director of the Portage Teachers’ Federal Credit Union. Until
recently, he was a member of the Supervisory Committee of the REGIONAL
Federal Credit Union.
Hilary was an acknowledged lover of opera, and for many years was an ardent
supporter of the Lyric Opera of Chicago and the Chicago Opera Theater. He
was fond of gardening and a lover of nature. He contributed his knowledge of
plants during the time he was a member of the Portage Garden Club. He was
considered a welcoming host and an excellent cook by his many friends. His
love of travel took him to many exotic places; Machu Picchu in Peru, the
Nile in Egypt, Africa, Costa Rica, Italy, Scotland, Mexico and the Bahamas.
