Herbert Owen Dilworth, Jr. passed away peacefully surrounded by his family
on March 16, 2009 at home in Chesterton.
He was born August 16, 1928 in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of Herbert O.
Sr. and Clara E. (Wilson) Dilworth.
On Dec. 1, 1951 in Nashville, Tenn., he married Juetta Shofner, who
survives.
He is also survived by his children, Alicia (Kevin) Brennan of Chesterton,
Karen Passons of Brentwood, Tenn., Herbert O. III (Jenny) Dilworth of
Michigan City, and Susan Johnson of Canton, Mich.; grandchildren, Mark
(Renee) Brennan of Bellingham, Wash., Kathleen (Josh) Malone of Kouts,
Michelle and Timothy Johnson of Canton, Mich.; great-grandchildren, Elaine
and Emily Malone of Kouts and Merritt Brennan of Bellingham, Wash.
He was preceded in death by three sisters and brothers.
Herbert served with the 511th Airborne during the Korean Conflict. He worked
at Bethlehem Steel Corporation, Sparrows Point and Burns Harbor Plants,
where he retired after 36 years. He graduated from Baltimore City College
and attended Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md., Purdue North
Central in Westville, and Pima College in Tucson, Ariz. After retiring,
Herbert volunteered following and working with the Chesterton High School
Cross Country Team and was an active member of the Trojan Guard Marching
Band Boosters. He was a tutor of many students in ESL and GED at the Adult
Learning Centers in Chesterton and Tucson, Ariz. and Chesterton High
School’s Private Tutors. He enjoyed studying languages, golf, running,
traveling in the 50 United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe and the South
Seas.
There will be no visitation or funeral service. Cremation will be at
Heritage Crematory, Portage. A private family gathering will be held at a
future date.
