Former Chesterton Board and Council member Ronald Owen Sabinske, 74, died
Friday, Dec. 11, 2009, from complications of Parkinson’s Disease.
He was born July 2, 1935, in Chesterton.
On May 18, 1962, in Edwardsburg, Mich., he married Helen L. McCormick, who
survives in Chesterton.
He is also survived by a daughter, Betty M. Sabinske of Kokomo; a son,
Robert F. Sabinske of Liberty Township; three siblings, Sharon Holley, Viola
Piotroski, and Carl Hyde, all of Michigan City; a special cousin, Dianne
Sabinske Justice of Chesterton; and special friends, Al and Marcia Gaston,
Bill and Sharon Skalker, and Carroll “Gus” and Carol Gustafson, all of
Chesterton.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Don Sabinske and Tom Hyde.
Ron was a 1953 graduate of Chesterton High School and served with the U.S.
Army 82nd Airborne Division. He worked as a supervisor at the Blast Furnace
Division of U.S. Steel in Gary, with 42 years of service, and was on the
first startup team of the 13th blast furnace at Gary Works.
From 1980 through 1987 he served on the Chesterton Board of Trustees and
from 1992 to 1995 on its successor, the Chesterton Town Council. During his
tenure he served as liaison to the Chesterton Police Department, Chesterton
Fire Department, and Chesterton Park Board.
He belonged to Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
Ron was also a member of Sand Creek Country Club and Chesterton Moose Lodge
No. 1623. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan always proud of the fact that he
and his fellow graduate Dick Newton were asked to try out for the Cubs, and
a bowler, golfer, swimmer, baseballer, mushballer, and enjoyer of games of
chance.
There will be no funeral service or visitation.
