Eleanor N. Murray, 94, of Chesterton, passed away March 29, 2009 in Porter
Valparaiso Hospital Campus.
She was born July 3, 1914 in Meridian, Miss. the daughter of John Thomas and
Harriet Adelaide (Norton) Hermansader
On April 6, 1947 in Grosse Point, Mich., she married Bonsel Murray, who
preceded her in death in 1990.
She is survived by James Thomas (Kari) Murray, of Chesterton; Sarah Emily
Mahboubi, of Muncie; grandsons, Kevin J. (Rachel) Murray, of Chesterton,
Cole L. Murray of Playa Vista, Calif., Nabil J. Mahboubi and Na’im B.
Mahboubi, both of Muncie; and special friends, Marsha Wood, Sue Keiser and
Pam Babcock.
Eleanor graduated in 1935 with a B.S. in Art from Drake University, Des
Moines, Iowa. As a girl in the 1920s, Eleanor was a Girl Scout, she lettered
in swimming and basketball in college, was a long-time member of League of
Women Voters, ISTA, Association of Artists and Craftsmen of Porter County
and a contributor for the Chesterton Art Fair. She was a member of BPW and
was honored once as Woman of the Year. She was commissioned to paint murals
at the courthouse in Valparaiso for the Indiana Sesquicentennial. She was a
long-time member of Porter United Methodist Church, where she sang in the
choir for many years. She was a member of the United Methodist Women and
served on the Calumet District Board.
Funeral services, Pastor G. Thomas Jones officiating, will be at 10 a.m.,
Thursday, April 2 at White-Love Funeral Home, 525 S. 2nd St., Chesterton.
Interment will follow at Chesterton Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, April 1 from 3-7 p.m. at White-Love Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the American Bible Society and Boys and Girls Club
Duneland Unit.
