Porter resident Betty J. Samilson, 78, died Saturday, Aug. 2, at Porter
Valparaiso Hospital Campus.
She was born on Nov. 20, 1929, in Michigan City, the daughter of Charles and
Agnes (Shifkowski) France, who preceded her in death.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Roger Samilson.
She is survived by two daughters, Bonnie Samilson and Linda Spry, both of
Porter; a son, Robert Samilson of Tucson, Ariz.; and a grandson, Aaron
Copollo-Samilson.
She was preceded in death by a son, Ronald.
Betty was a 1948 graduate of Chesterton High School. She was employed by the
Town of Porter Clerk-Treasurer’s Office and more recently as dispatcher for
the Porter Police Department. She also ran the High House Hamburger Shop in
the 1970s. Betty was active in Porter politics, for many years volunteered
for the Wizard of Oz Festival, and was a charter member of the Women of the
Moose No. 846. Her hobbies included oil painting and bingo.
Funeral services, Rick Lawson officiating, are scheduled for Wednesday at the
White-Love Funeral Home, 525 S. Second St. in Chesterton, with interment to
follow at Chesterton Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at White-Love,
with the Women of the Moose No. 846 holding a memorial service at 7 p.m. on
Tuesday.
