Helen M. Bonfield, age 97, of Michigan City, passed away Sunday, May 6, 2007
at 3:11 a.m. at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Janet (Al) Todd,
Stevensville, Mich.
She was born November 7, 1909 in Vicenza, Italy, the daughter of the late
Luigi and Pasqua Mazzaia.
She immigrated to the United States with her family on May 9, 1913. On Aug.
20, 1934 in Michigan City, she married Joseph L. Bonfield, who preceded her
in death on Sept. 21, 1965.
She is survived by a son, James (Karla) Bonfield of Chesterton; two
daughters, Joan (Jim) Jarka of Michigan City, Janet (Al) Todd of
Stevensville, Mich.; 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, many nieces
and nephews; two daughters-in-law, Sharon Bonfield of Placentia, Calif., Judy
Bonfield of Michigan City.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Richard Bonfield and Daniel Bonfield;
a great grandson Cody Bonfield; a sister, Mary Scott; and two brothers,
Hervin Mazzaia, and Leo Mazzaia.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, and St. Mary's Rosary
Sodality. She was former president of Park School PTA and active in Scouting
for many years. After retiring from the J.C. Penny Catalog Department, she
was a volunteer for the Red Cross Blood Mobile, American Cancer Society and
Michigan City Senior Center, and won the R.S.V.P. Volunteer of the year award
in 1980. She will be greatly missed by family and friends.
A Mass of Christian burial, Rev. James McGrogan officiating, will be at 10
a.m. Thursday, May 10 at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Internment will follow
in Greenwood Cemetery, Michigan City.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. and Thursday from 8:30 till 9:30
a.m. at the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel. A Vigil Service will be at 6:30
p.m. Wednesday evening in the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel.
