Charles W. Nelson, Ph.D., 92, a resident of Heartland Health Care Center,
Moline, Ill., formerly of Dune Acres, died Wednesday, December 19, 2007 at
the Center.
He was born Aug. 12, 1915 in Devils Lake, North Dakota the son of Henry Nels
Nelson and Katherine Christine Scmitt - Nelson.
On Sept. 20, 1939 in Oregon, he married Dorothea Louise Davidson. She
preceded him in death on Jan. 25, 2000.
Charles and Dorothea had three sons; Michael Davidson Nelson, William George
Nelson and James Charles Nelson. Michael preceded his parent’s death. William
Nelson lives in Rock Island, Ill., and James Nelson lives in Needham, Mass.
Charles served during WWII and obtained an honorable medical discharge after
serving with the Army and the Air Force. He attended Linnfield College,
University of Oregon and eventually obtained his Ph.D. in Industrial
Psychology from the University of Chicago.
Charles worked as an industrial consultant for many companies including
Jewel, United Airlines, Quaker Oats, Chicago Police Department, Lakeside
Labs, and was the principal owner of Management Research Associates.
He eventually taught Sociology at Indiana State University where he continued
to do research on organizational makeup, and processes for improving the
internal operations of organizations. After retirement, he continued to do
research at Indiana State University for several years before he was
afflicted with Alzheimer’s and moved to Rock Island to be near his oldest
surviving son.
Inurnment services for Dr. Nelson will be held at a later date in the Ocean
View Cemetery, Astoria, Oregon. There will be no local services.
Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 3030 – 7th Ave., Rock Island will be assisting
the family with arrangements.
