Roena Anderson dies at 97

Roena Anderson, 97, formerly of Chesterton, died Nov 8, 2006 at her home in Atlanta, Ga.

She was born Oct 6, 1909 in LaPorte, Ind. the daughter of Paul David and Edna Viola (Stewig) Sharples. She had one brother Byrl Lincoln Sharples.

Roena moved to Chesterton Nov 24, 1916 and on May 16, 1942 in St. Louis, Mo., she married Herbert William Anderson of Ogden Dunes. Herbert preceded her in death on July 5, 1969.

She is survived by her son James Paul Anderson (Mary Ann Kretz) of Atlanta, Ga.; one grandson, James Kent of Cincinnati, Ohio; a cousin, Fern Eddy Schultz of LaPorte; a sister-in-law, Valeria (Johnson) Sharples of Tuscon, Ariz., a sister-in-law, Ethel (Hughes) Anderson of York, Penn.; a brother-in-law William Howard Anderson of Holiday, Fla. and many nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by her daughter Lois Carole (David) Ligda, RN of Chesterton, Ind.

Roena was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Wesleyan Circle. She was an active member of the Porter Memorial Hospital Guild for over 20 years and served as secretary in 1993. She was a long time member of both the Duneland and LaPorte County Historical Societies.

She graduated from Chesterton High School in 1928 and also attended the Gary Business College and Indiana University in Gary. She worked as office manager at the Wilbar Manufacturing Company at 144 Park Ave. in Chesterton from 1930 to 1963 when she and her husband retired from the company that he had founded in 1928.

A private service will be held at a later date, followed by the interment of ashes in Augsburg Cemetery, Porter.
