Mildred Mary (Fabianic) Callis dies at 85

Mildred Mary (Fabianic) Callis, age 85, of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, former CHS teacher, passed away Sunday, Dec. 17, 2006 at Wexner Heritage House, Columbus.

She was born Oct. 9, 1921 in Hammond, Ind. the daughter of Matthew and Milka (Belan) Fabianic, both of whom preceded her in death.

She was the widow of Roger Burr Callis, who preceded her in death in 1992.

She is survived by a daughter Patricia Lee (Jim Nicholson) Callis of Pickerington, Ohio; a nephew Jeffrey (Kathleen) Stynowick and grand-niece and nephew Gregory and Pamela Stynowick.

Mildred had a love of birds and flowers. She was a retired high school teacher, serving for nearly 29 years in the state of Indiana; she taught home economics at Union High School in 1952 and Wheeler High School from 1953-57 where she also managed the cafeteria; she taught shorthand, typing and business office practice at Chesterton High School from 1957-64 and 1970-82 and Valparaiso High School from 1965-69. She was a member of the Croatian Fraternal Union, Lodge #170, Hammond, Ind. since 1941; a member of The League of Women’s Voters in Ind., Tenn. and Ohio; member of the Fairfield Glade, (Tenn.) Methodist Church and St. Francis Parish, (Fairfield Glade) Book Clubs.

Her extensive education included having graduated from Hammond High School in 1939, she received her Bachelors Degree of Science in Education from Ball State University in 1943 and her Masters Degree in Science from Indiana State University in 1973. She was in the Honors Societies in Home Economics and Business Education at Ball State University. She was a member of Delta Theta Tau Sorority and Delta Pi Epsilon National Honorary Graduate Fraternity.

A memorial mass will be celebrated in her memory at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 1051 S. Waggoner Rd., Reynoldsburg, Ohio 43068 on Tuesday, Dec. 26, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Fr. Daniel L. Ochs officiating.

Memorial donations may be made to Zusman Community Hospice, 1151 College Ave., Columbus, Ohio 43209 and the Fairfield Area Humane Society, 1721 Granville Pike, Lancaster, Ohio 43130.
