Maria Chavez, of Valparaiso, passed away Saturday, Oct. 28, 2006 at Porter
Valparaiso Hospital Campus, Valparaiso. She was 105.
She was born April 3, 1901 in Jallsco, Mexico, the daughter of Jesus and
Anastasia (Lopez) Regalado, both of whom preceded her in death.
In 1922 in Chicago, she married Guadelupe Chavez, who preceded her in death.
She is survived by five sons, John (Margie) Chavez of Crown Point, Salvador
(Helen) Chavez of Portage, David (Carol) Chavez of Hobart, Robert (Angie)
Chavez of Sahahtohia, Texas and Richard (Rita) Chavez of Portage; a
daughter, Beatrice (Lohnie) Waters of Valparaiso; 25 grandchildren, 46
great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death be two daughters, Maria Chavez and Victoria
Mullen; a brother, John Regalado and three sisters, Carmen Torrez, Dora
Torrez and Marcella Gonzalez.
Maria was a home maker. She was a member of the Legion of Mary at St. Mark’s
and enjoyed gardening. She was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish,
Valparaiso.
Funeral services, Fr. Doug Mayer officiating, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday,
Oct. 31 at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish, 356 W. Seven Mile Rd., Valparaiso.
Interment will be at Oak Hill Memorial Park, Gary.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Monday at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home,
Portage Chapel, 6941 Central Ave., Portage.
