Former Chesterton resident A. Stanley Rand, Smithsonian Staff Scientist
known for his research in herpetology, died of complications from cancer
Nov. 14, 2005 at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, M.D.
He was born in Seneca Falls, N.Y., the son of world traveled ornithologist
Dr. Austin Rand and Rhuea Rand.
He is survived by his wife Patricia Grubbs Rand of Alexandria, Va.; a son,
Hugh Rand of Seattle, Wash.; two daughters, Margaret Weaver of Erie, Pa.,
and Katherine Rand of Alexandria; a brother, Will Rand of Newton, Mass and
two daughters.
Stanley was a Chesterton High School graduate and a graduate of DePauw
University. He received his doctoral degree from Harvard University and
lived for 33 years in Panama at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute.
His work on frogs and lizards built him an international reputation,
colleagues said. He made a significant contribution in animal communication.
He was a prolific writer. He published his first scientific article in 1944,
when he was 12 years old, presumably assisting his father.
