Ruth Yvonne Vedell Schaaf dies at 70

Ruth Yvonne Vedell Schaaf, formerly of Chesterton, 70, died Nov. 7, 2004 in Indianapolis.

She was born May 20, 1934 in Gary, the daughter of Maude and August Hjalmer Vedell, both of whom preceded her in death.

She is survived by her husband, Alvin David Schaaf; two daughters, Diane E. Schaaf and Julie S. Lakes and a son-in-law, Sandy Lakes.

She grew up in Chesterton and was voted Centennial Queen in 1952. She became a Navy wife after attending college at Indiana University. She was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority and a 30 year member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. She helped support and contribute to the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Museum of Miniature Houses in Carmel, the Sharing Place and other important organizations.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Indianapolis. Interment will be at Santa Claus United Methodist Church Cemetery, Santa Claus, Ind.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Flanner & Buchanan Broad Ripple Funeral Center, Indianapolis.

Memorials may be made to the church or the Indiana Cancer Research Foundation or the charity of your choice.
